South Canterbury Basketball runs on the energy, passion, and generosity of our volunteers. From keeping the scorebench running smoothly to making sure teams have everything they need, our volunteers are the heartbeat of our community.
We’re always looking for new people to join the team, whether you have a couple of hours a month or want to be involved every week. No basketball experience? No problem! We’ll show you everything you need to know.
Here are just a few of the roles our amazing volunteers fill:
All our officials have access to Basketball New Zealand’s resources and training modules. These include rule updates, mechanics videos, and referee pathways to guide your development. Through our GameDay portal, you can:
- Team Managers – Organising uniforms, gear, and player information; making sure teams are where they need to be on game day.
- Floor Controllers – Helping tournaments and competitions run smoothly, keeping schedules on track, and being the go-to for game-day questions.
- Scorebench Operators – Running the scoreboard and keeping the official game stats.
- Event Helpers – Setting up courts, packing down equipment, selling tickets or merchandise, and welcoming people to our events.
- Rep Programme Support – Helping with travel, meals, or logistics for representative teams.
- Photography & Media – Capturing the action and helping share our stories online.
Why Volunteer?

We’ll Set You Up for Success
Every volunteer receives guidance, training (where needed), and support from our staff and experienced helpers. You’ll never be thrown in the deep end, unless you ask to be! Ready to Get Involved? If you’re keen to help out in any capacity, big or small, we’d love to hear from you. Basketball in South Canterbury doesn’t just happen, it’s made possible by people like you.
